If You Smell Gas:

Eliminate Flames and Sparks

Immediately put out all smoking materials and any other open flames. Do not operate lights, appliances, cell phones or telephones. Flames or sparks can trigger a fire or explosion.

Immediately Leave the Area

Insure that everyone leaves the building or area where you suspect gas is leaking.

Shut Off the Gas

If it is safe to do so, then turn off the main supply valve on your tank. To close the valve, turn it to the right (clockwise).

Report the Leak

Once you have left the area, call your gas retailer and report the leak. If you are unable to reach your retailer, then call 911.

Do Not Return To The Area Until It Is Safe

Stay away from the endangered area until your gas retailer has determined that it is safe for you to return.

Have Your System Checked

Do not attempt to use your gas appliances until you have your system checked. You can have your retailer or a qualified professional check your entire system to ensure that it is leak free.

Grill Safety

Before You Grill:

  • Read the manufacturer's instructions. Call their help line if you have questions.
  • Make sure your grill is positioned in an open area away from buildings and out of high traffic areas.
  • Make sure your grill is functioning correctly, all parts are in place and the grill is stable.
  • Apply non-stick spray to the grates before lighting the grill. This will save clean up time.

When Grilling:

  • Wear safe clothing. Do not wear hanging shirt tails, aprons or other frills.
  • Never leave the grill unattended.
  • Use long handled utensils to avoid burns.
  • Have a fire extinguisher handy. You can also use baking soda to control a grease fire. If you don't have a fire extinguisher, you can keep a bucket of sand or a garden hose ready to use.
  • Do not attempt to move a hot grill. A fall can cause serious burns.

After You Grill:

  • Turn the lp grill cylinder as well as the grill burners to the off positions.
  • Use a wire brush to scrub away buildup on the grill's grates once it has cooled. Use grease-cutting dishwashing detergent on the grate, scrub it, rinse it and repeat the process several times.

Cylinder Safety

  • Move your grill away from your house and away from combustible material before lighting it.
  • Do not store or place a propane cylinder indoors or in an enclosed area.
  • Do not exposed a propane cylinder in an area of excessive heat (above 120 degrees).
  • Do not store or place a spare cylinder under or near a grill.
  • Transport and store cylinders in the upright position.
  • Make sure your cylinder valve is closed when not being used.
  • Do not keep a cylinder in a hot vehicle or closed trunk.
